Well i covered my entire bench top with hard board (screwed on) then in a couple of years when it gets all dirty and covered with paint, coffee stains, and you can start to tell what i have had for lunch for the past few years, and what ever.. Whether to add protective coating to a wooden work bench is a matter of debate among woodworkers. many believe that the best surface to work on is raw wood and that applying a coating makes it more slippery.. I built this bench for some friends who have a toddler. they wanted a piece of furniture that could fit inside a built-in in their 100 year old craftsmen home..
